IfoEdit

IfoEdit is the classic Doom9-era low-level DVD-Video tool: inspect IFOs, strip streams, demux VOBs, and do bare-bones authoring. Use it when DVDStyler/Nero output needs surgical fixes.

Guide: inspect and fix a DVD

  1. Open VIDEO_TS.IFO. Review title VTS list, audio/subtitle PGC tables, and chapter maps.
  2. Remove unwanted audio/subtitle streams with care; get VTS sectors afterward.
  3. Save as new IFOs; replace on a working copy of VIDEO_TS.
  4. Test in a software player, then burn with ImgBurn.

Guide: basic DVD authoring from VOBs

  1. Obtain multiplexed DVD-compliant VOBs (from TMPGEnc + mplex, or demuxed camera VOBs).
  2. Use IfoEdit’s authoring helpers to create IFOs that point at the VOBs.
  3. This path is advanced and brittle – prefer DVDStyler for new projects; keep IfoEdit for repair.

Not for VCD/CVD/HD DVD/AVCHD/8KDVD structures.

ImgBurn

ImgBurn builds and burns DVD-Video, Blu-ray folder sets, cue/bin, and custom UDF images. It does not encode or design menus – it writes what authoring tools produce. Essential for DVD, HD DVD folder burns, AVCHD-on-DVD, and 8KDVD UDF 2.60 masters.

Guide: burn a DVD-Video (VIDEO_TS)

  1. Mode: Write files/folders to disc (or Create image file from files/folders for ISO).
  2. Source: select the folder that contains VIDEO_TS (not only the VOBs). When prompted “only selected 1 folder”, choose to add the contents if needed so VIDEO_TS sits at the root of the image.
  3. Options: File System ISO9660 + UDF; for DVD-Video leave defaults. Labels: set volume name.
  4. Destination: burner + blank DVD. Verify enabled. Build.

Guide: burn VCD / SVCD / CVD images

  1. If VCDEasy/VCDImager gave you bin/cue: mode Write image file to disc, load the .cue, burn.
  2. Do not treat a Video CD as a data ISO9660 folder burn unless you know the Mode 2 layout is already correct.

Guide: burn AVCHD (BDMV on DVD media)

  1. Author BDMV + CERTIFICATE with multiAVCHD / TMPGEnc / PowerProducer.
  2. In ImgBurn write files/folders with UDF 2.50 (AVCHD on DVD commonly needs this).
  3. Ensure BDMV and CERTIFICATE are at the root of the disc.
  4. Burn DVD-R; test in a Blu-ray player that supports AVCHD.

Guide: rebuild / burn an 8KDVD (UDF 2.60)

  1. From 8KDVD Maker, if the ISO mounts empty, use the leftover DISC_TEMP folder.
  2. ImgBurn → Write files/folders to disc (or Create image file…).
  3. Source: DISC_TEMP. Options: File System UDF, revision 2.60; recurse subdirs; include system files.
  4. Advanced → Restrictions: enable HD DVD / BD Unicode options as in the official 8KDVD Maker guide.
  5. When asked about one folder, add the contents of DISC_TEMP.
  6. Burn BD-R/BD-XL (recommended) or rebuild a clean .iso.

Guide: HD DVD data burn

For advanced users with HD DVD burners/media: write the authored HVDVD_TS structure with an appropriate UDF revision for the target player. Most hobbyists only need playback of pressed HD DVDs, not burning.

Extended tips: layouts that fail in living-room players

Most “ImgBurn burned fine but the player says DATA DISC” problems are layout mistakes. DVD-Video needs VIDEO_TS (and usually AUDIO_TS empty) at the root. AVCHD needs BDMV + CERTIFICATE at the root. 8KDVD needs the Maker/Menu Maker tree at the root on UDF 2.60. If you select the parent folder instead of its contents, you nest those names one level down and hardware players ignore the disc.

Layer breaks on DVD-9: set them in the authoring app when possible; ImgBurn can honour or calculate breaks but cannot invent seamless branches for a broken VIDEO_TS. Always Verify. For archive masters, also keep an ISO on hard disk.

cue/bin Video CD burns: open the .cue, not the .bin alone, so Mode 2 / XA track info is preserved. Writing a VCD folder as ordinary data files is the wrong toolpath unless your authoring app produced a true data ISO intentionally.

Device tips: run ImgBurn as Administrator if drivers flap; disable background packet writers; firmware-update USB BD burners before trusting BD-XL 8KDVD masters.

DVD Flick

DVD Flick converts loose video files into a DVD-Video project with menus and chapters, then burns via bundled ImgBurn. Ideal when you want “drop files → disc” without designing fancy menus. VideoHelp lists the original and the community DVD Flick v2 fork.

Guide: make a DVD from files

  1. Install DVD Flick (or v2). Launch and create a new project.
  2. Add title(s): each video file becomes a title. Add extra audio tracks or SubRip subtitles per title.
  3. Set target size (DVD-5 / DVD-9). Encoding quality: prefer two-pass when available (v2).
  4. Configure a menu template or “None” for autoplay.
  5. Set chapter intervals or import chapter lists.
  6. Create DVD: Flick encodes, authors VIDEO_TS, and can launch ImgBurn to write the disc or ISO.
  7. If encode fails on a weird file, try AVStoDVD or pre-convert with HandBrake to MPEG-2.

Other formats

DVD Flick is DVD-Video only – not VCD/CVD/HD DVD/AVCHD/8KDVD.

DVDStyler

DVDStyler is free, cross-platform DVD-Video authoring (dvdauthor + Guile menus). Official site: dvdstyler.org. Use it as your default DVD tool before paying for Nero or Architect.

Guide: complete DVD-Video project

  1. Install DVDStyler. Project → properties: disc capacity (4.7 / 8.5 GB), PAL or NTSC, audio format defaults (AC3 recommended for players).
  2. Drag video files into the titleset list. Non-MPEG sources are queued for encode (FFmpeg). Already-compliant MPEG-2/VOB can pass through.
  3. Double-click each title: set name, cropping, audio tracks, subtitles (IDX/SUB or softsubs where supported), and chapters (manual or every N minutes).
  4. Menu design: choose a template or empty menu. Add a background image (exactly 720×480 NTSC or 720×576 PAL). Place buttons; set actions (jump to title, chapter, audio menu, play all).
  5. Multi-titleset: add titlesets when mixing aspect ratios or when you need separate menu domains.
  6. Optional VMGM / first-play menu for studio-style intros.
  7. File → Burn DVD. Options: create ISO image, create DVD folder, or burn. For finicky hardware burners, create a DVD folder and burn with ImgBurn.
  8. Always enable verify. Test on a $20 standalone player – PC software hides many authoring mistakes.

Tips

  • Keep total bitrate inside disc capacity; watch the capacity bar.
  • For 16:9, set display aspect correctly or players pillarbox wrongly.
  • Subtitles: prefer DVD-compliant bitmap subs for maximum player support.

Other formats

DVDStyler is DVD-Video only. VCD/SVCD/CVD → VCDEasy/DeVeDe. AVCHD → multiAVCHD/TMPGEnc AW/PowerProducer. HD DVD → Scenarist/Nero HD. 8KDVD → 8KDVD tools.

CyberLink PowerProducer 6 Ultra

CyberLink PowerProducer 6 Ultra is the still-sold consumer disc authoring app that lists DVD, AVCHD, Blu-ray, and AVCREC on CyberLink’s product page. Public link-out to the official site (trial available).

Guide: DVD-Video

  1. Launch PowerProducer → Produce Movie Disc → DVD.
  2. Add video clips from HDD or capture devices. Arrange order; edit chapters.
  3. Pick a menu template; customize titles and layout.
  4. Select Prefer Quality or Prefer Capacity. Preview.
  5. Burn to DVD±R or create an ISO. Enable verify when offered.

Guide: AVCHD

  1. Produce Movie Disc → AVCHD.
  2. Import HD clips (AVCHD cam files work best). Build the menu for HD display.
  3. Set target media (DVD for AVCHD-on-DVD). Start production.
  4. If the built-in burner fails UDF requirements, output folders and burn with ImgBurn UDF 2.50.
  5. Play in an AVCHD-capable Blu-ray player. For a newer CyberLink burn suite, see Power2Go 13 (linked from the product pages).

Guide: Blu-ray / AVCREC (when licensed)

  1. Select Blu-ray or AVCREC project types your edition unlocks.
  2. Import HD/AVC material; author menus; burn BD-R or AVCREC media as documented in-app.

Sony DVD Architect Pro 6.0

DVD Architect Pro 6 (Sony) is menu-centric DVD authoring, often fed from Vegas Pro renders. Pro builds also expose Blu-ray / AVCHD project types.

Guide: DVD-Video

  1. New DVD project. Set disc size, video standard, and widescreen flags.
  2. Import MPEG-2 program streams / VOBs already encoded for DVD (Architect prefers compliant media; re-encode in Vegas or TMPGEnc if needed).
  3. Create a menu page: background still or motion video, buttons with link actions (Play title, Jump to chapter, Playlist).
  4. Set end actions and first-play so the disc behaves like commercial DVDs.
  5. Optimize / Prepare to build VIDEO_TS. Fix any flagged non-compliant assets.
  6. Burn or write ISO; verify; test on hardware.

Guide: AVCHD / Blu-ray structure

  1. Choose AVCHD or Blu-ray project (license-dependent).
  2. Import HD assets; design HD menus.
  3. Prepare the BDMV tree. For AVCHD-on-DVD burn with UDF 2.50 via ImgBurn; for BD-R use BD burner settings.
  4. Test on the target player family before duplicating.

Nero 8 Ultra Edition HD

Nero 8 Ultra Edition HD is a period all-in-one suite: Nero Burning ROM, Vision (DVD / early HD), Recode, ShowTime, and historic HD DVD / Blu-ray authoring components. Treat it as a Windows XP/Vista-era VM guest.

Guide: DVD-Video with Nero Vision

  1. Open Nero Vision → Create DVD → DVD-Video.
  2. Add video clips; trim; set chapters.
  3. Edit menu templates; preview.
  4. Burn or make image. Prefer Verify.

Guide: VCD / SVCD burn

  1. In Burning ROM or Vision, choose Video CD or Super Video CD project.
  2. Add already-encoded MPEG. For strict SVCD leave compliance on.

Guide: China Video Disc (CVD)

  1. Encode CVD MPEG-2 (352×480/576) in TMPGEnc first.
  2. Create a Super Video CD project.
  3. Turn off “Make standard compliant SVCD” (or equivalent wording).
  4. Add the CVD stream, burn CD-R, test on SVCD/CVD-capable players.
  5. If Nero rejects the file, use VCDEasy instead.

Guide: HD DVD authoring / burning (period)

  1. Use the HD DVD project types included with Ultra HD builds where present.
  2. Follow Nero’s HD DVD wizard for menus and H.264/VC-1 assets per the version’s limits.
  3. Hardware HD DVD burner + media required for physical discs; most users today only need ShowTime/Vision for playing pressed HD DVDs.
  4. Professional interactive HD DVD still belongs in Scenarist.

Guide: AVCHD

Nero Vision 5 (in Nero 8) was an early consumer AVCHD path: create AVCHD project, add HD clips, SmartEncoding, burn to DVD media as BDMV. Prefer multiAVCHD or TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4 for more control.

Not CBHD

Extended tips: project choices and era hardware

Nero 8 is a suite: Burning ROM for raw project types, Vision for guided movie discs, Recode for bitrate fitting, ShowTime for playback. For CVD, Vision/Burning ROM Super Video CD projects with compliance disabled is the period method; if the UI still rejects half-D1 MPEG-2, stop fighting Nero and finish in VCDEasy. For DVD-Video, Vision menus are adequate for home videos; escape to DVDStyler or Architect when you need layered menus and playlists.

HD DVD features in Ultra HD builds assume mid-2000s drivers and often physical HD DVD burners that barely exist retail today. Treat HD DVD authoring here as archival experimentation: keep projects small, verify on a software player first, and do not expect modern Windows 11 to install cleanly without a VM. Interactive studio titles still need Scenarist Advanced Content with a dongle.

AVCHD in Vision 5: create an AVCHD project, add HD clips, let SmartEncoding fit DVD media, burn BDMV. Always confirm UDF 2.50 if you burn outside Nero. Compare results with multiAVCHD on the same clips – multiAVCHD often muxes cleaner for picky Blu-ray decks.

ShowTime / Vision playback of commercial HD DVDs is the realistic daily use on a machine that still has an HD DVD drive. Keep firmware and AACS client components of that era aligned; this site’s decrypt section is separate and outbound-only for a reason.

Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6 Plus (trial)

Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6 Plus trial (Archive) focuses on consumer DVD menus; with the HD Power Pack it grows into HD DVD / AVCHD / Blu-ray era projects.

Guide: DVD-Video

  1. New Project → DVD-Video / +VR as offered. Add videos from hard disk.
  2. Use the chapter tool; mark scenes for the chapter menu.
  3. Menu wizard: intro video optional, main menu, chapter submenu. Apply themes; edit button text.
  4. Preview. Create disc / burn / ISO. Prefer quality that fits single-layer unless you intend DVD-9.
  5. Verify burn; test in hardware.

Guide: HD DVD (Plus 6 + HD Power Pack)

  1. Install Plus 6, then the HD Power Pack plugin.
  2. New HD DVD project. Import HD assets within the bitrate/resolution limits shown in the wizard.
  3. Author HD menus; output for HD DVD burning if you have media/drive, or keep as a lab image.
  4. Remember: this is HD DVD, not CBHD and not Blu-ray Disc Association BD-Java titles.

Guide: AVCHD

  1. With HD Power Pack, choose AVCHD / BD-style project.
  2. Import HD clips; menus; compile BDMV.
  3. Burn to DVD with UDF 2.50 for AVCHD player compatibility.
