8KDVD official site & authoring guide

8KDVD is HDDVD Revived’s offline 8K physical format: VP9 (+ Opus) on a UDF 2.60 disc with HTML/JS menus, multi-resolution (8K / 4K / HD / 3D), and launchers for Windows and Chromium browsers. This entry is the documentation hub.

What you need

  1. Video File Maker – encode tiers (HQ Plus / HQ / Standard / LP), SDR + HDR10.
  2. Menu Maker – interactive menus.
  3. Windows Player and/or Kodi plugin.
  4. ImgBurn with UDF 2.60 for masters.
  5. Optional legacy: 8KDVD Maker wizard (deprecated).
  6. Packaging: Photoshop box template; red DVD-sized cases.

End-to-end authoring (modern path)

  1. Export a master SOURCE.mp4 (and optional anaglyph Source3D.mp4 for .3D4) from your NLE.
  2. Run Video File Maker batch for your profile (Standard is the 100-minute / 50GB benchmark; HQ Plus for shorter premium 8K).
  3. Build menus in Menu Maker so users can switch 8K/4K/3D.
  4. Assemble the disc folder; generate ISO or burn with ImgBurn UDF 2.60.
  5. Test in Windows Player, Chromium Universal Web Launcher, and Kodi plugin.

Guide: finish retail-style packaging

  1. Download 8KDVDtemplate.zip.
  2. Open in Photoshop / compatible editor. Replace front key art; keep the mandatory 8KDVD logo and 8kdvd.hddvd-revived.com on the back per the license.
  3. Create a QR to your TMDb / SnipeSearch Movies page; drop into the QR layer.

8KDVD Player for Windows

The 8KDVD Player for Windows reads the 8KDVD folder/ISO layout and launches the correct bitstream for your display.

Guide: play an 8KDVD

  1. Install/extract the GitHub “First” release.
  2. Insert the disc, mount the ISO, or point the player at the extracted folder.
  3. Pick 8K / 4K / HD / 3D from the menu as authored.
  4. Hardware: GPU capable of your target resolution; 8K output needs serious VRAM (sister-site tests cited ~8-10 GB class cards for full 8K paths).
  5. If the player fails but Chromium works, use the Universal Web Launcher on the disc (see Watching 8KDVD).

Kodi alternative

Install the Kodi plugin for HTPC setups.

8KDVD Kodi Plugin

The 8KDVD Kodi Plugin (plugin.video.8kdvd on Archive) plays 8KDVD content inside Kodi with menus, resolution selection, and chapters.

Guide: install and play

  1. Download the ZIP from the Archive item.
  2. In Kodi: Add-ons → Install from zip file → select the plugin ZIP (enable unknown sources if needed).
  3. Open the 8KDVD add-on; browse to your disc drive or copied 8KDVD folder.
  4. Choose 8K / 4K / HD / 3D. Use chapter entries when authored.
  5. Performance tip from the sister-site demo: Nvidia 30-series class GPU in full 8K used roughly 300 MB RAM, 2 CPU threads, ~10 GB VRAM – size your HTPC accordingly.

8KDVD Video File Maker (V1.0.1 HDR)

The 8KDVD Video File Maker V1.0.1 HDR (GitHub Manual-8KDVD-Video-Encoder) is the encode heart of the current standard: batch scripts for SDR and HDR10 VP9 outputs across HQ Plus / HQ / Standard / LP profiles.

Guide: encode an 8KDVD video tier

  1. Download the V1.0.1 HDR release from GitHub; extract where you have hundreds of GB free.
  2. Export SOURCE.mp4 from your editor at full 8K when possible (7680×4320). Keep HDR10 metadata if the project is HDR.
  3. Optional: prepare anaglyph 4K Source3D.mp4 for the .3D4 variant (PowerDirector 16 depth 256, or Premiere anaglyph/ASC CDL methods linked from the authoring guide).
  4. Run the batch matching your profile:
    • HQ Plus – short premium 8K (guide cites ~70 mins @ ~22GB for the 8K tier).
    • HQ – high-bitrate 8K/4K mastering.
    • Standard – ~100-minute movie on 50GB-class media.
    • LP – long play packed onto 25GB.
  5. Confirm VP9 Profile 2 / Opus (or the script’s documented audio) as required by the Body of Standards.
  6. When finished, pass outputs to Menu Maker and assemble the disc.

HDR notes

HDR batches preserve HDR10 / wide gamut when the source carries metadata – verify on an HDR OLED/QLED. SDR batches are for SDR masters only; do not expect magic tone-mapping from SDR scripts.

Not VCD / DVD / HD DVD

This tool only produces 8KDVD bitstreams. Use TMPGEnc/VCDEasy/DVDStyler/Scenarist for those formats.

8KDVD Menu Maker

8KDVD Menu Maker builds the HTML/JavaScript navigation layer shipped on every 8KDVD: resolution switching (8K / 4K / HD / 3D) and chapter UI for the Universal Web Launcher and Windows player.

Guide: build menus

  1. Clone or download 8KDVD-Menu-Maker.
  2. Point it at your encoded video tiers from Video File Maker.
  3. Set background art (≥ 3500 px wide recommended), titles, and button labels.
  4. Enable links for each resolution variant you actually encoded – do not advertise 8K if only LP 4K exists.
  5. Export the menu folder into the disc structure beside the media files.
  6. Smoke-test by opening the menu HTML in Chromium before burning.
  7. Burn with ImgBurn UDF 2.60 or wrap into ISO.

IfoEdit

IfoEdit is the classic Doom9-era low-level DVD-Video tool: inspect IFOs, strip streams, demux VOBs, and do bare-bones authoring. Use it when DVDStyler/Nero output needs surgical fixes.

Guide: inspect and fix a DVD

  1. Open VIDEO_TS.IFO. Review title VTS list, audio/subtitle PGC tables, and chapter maps.
  2. Remove unwanted audio/subtitle streams with care; get VTS sectors afterward.
  3. Save as new IFOs; replace on a working copy of VIDEO_TS.
  4. Test in a software player, then burn with ImgBurn.

Guide: basic DVD authoring from VOBs

  1. Obtain multiplexed DVD-compliant VOBs (from TMPGEnc + mplex, or demuxed camera VOBs).
  2. Use IfoEdit’s authoring helpers to create IFOs that point at the VOBs.
  3. This path is advanced and brittle – prefer DVDStyler for new projects; keep IfoEdit for repair.

Not for VCD/CVD/HD DVD/AVCHD/8KDVD structures.
